Ladies’ newsletter – May 2016

  • What a brilliant day we had at Swindon.  I hope you all enjoyed yourselves as much as I did.  Sorry about the rain girls but at least we started out in sunshine and hopefully you didn’t get too wet! The rain seems to be following me around at the moment, hopefully it will improve!  Well done to all those in the prizes. Everyone at The Staffordshire made us very welcome which helped to make the day.  Thank you to all those who helped to organise the day and to our resident photographer Sue for the fabulous pics which are on display in the foyer as you come into the Ladies Locker Room. A big big thank you to all of you who took part on the day you really did make the day special, you are a great bunch of ladies.
  • I certainly don’t think any of us will forget our very very wet Ladies Open on the 10th of May. It rained all day it was just a matter of how hard!  We would have been better with snorkels and flippers rather than golf clubs! Despite the weather 22 teams out of 30 actually completed the game, and bearing in mind the conditions, there were good scores.  The winners came in with a score of 79, followed by 3 teams with 74.  The count back actually went down to the 18th hole to determine 2nd 3rd and 4th places. Congratulations to all of the prize winners and well done to all of you who persevered in such atrocious conditions. Thank you to Denise Morton and her team for their help in organising the day and to Margaret Edwards who stepped into the breach while Denise was away. Thanks must also go to Lynne Stone who resolved the majority of the competition and to Anne Collier and the girls for running the raffle which raise £135 for charity. Don’t forget our Ladies Invitation which is on the 5th July, the sheet will be going up in the Ladies Locker Room shortly – let’s get our prayer mats out for better weather!
  • Sadly we lost the Tri Match at the Wrekin.  Shifnal won with Wrekin coming 2nd. However we all enjoyed the day and the weather was glorious.  The Tri Match will be hosted at Lilleshall next year so come on Team Lilleshall we need a win!
  • We also lost the handicap league match at Ludlow but thank you girls for your valiant efforts. The next match is at Home against Hawkestone on the 3rd June so good luck we all know you will do your best.
  • We remain unbeaten in the Friendly matches, halving our game away at Ingestre.  It was nice to see Liz Johnson join in and she really enjoyed the day. It would be good to see some other new faces playing. These matches really are good fun and it’s a great way to make friends. Our next match is away at Shifnal on the 4th July and is the ‘A team match’ which means you have to have a handicap between 1 & 28.  There is another game later in the year for ladies with handicaps of 29 to 36.
  • Congratulations to Jane Carr who won the Past Captains match at Oswestry. Well done Jane!
  • Ladies please note – if there is a problem with the computer and you cannot swipe your card to enter a competition please just enter your details in the red book. THERE IS NO NEED TO PUT MONEY IN AN ENVELOPE IN THE BOX. When the Competition team enters your scores the computer will automatically take the money from your card.
  • INTERNET – As you are all probably aware we are having a lot of problems with our internet.  The General Committee are treating this with high priority and looking at installing a 4G system.  Without the Internet scores cannot be recorded on How Did I Do so please be patient with our Comps and Handicaps teams who are doing a sterling job!
  • My away weekend draws ever closer.  The balance of the monies need to be paid please girls as I have to pay St Pierre by the 3rd June. There is a list on the Captains board with details of the amounts owed. Please make your cheques payable to Linda Fisher and put them in an envelope marked St Pierre for the attention of Lynne Stone or Chris Downing.  The finer details of the trip will be issued shortly to those taking part, I know we will have a fab time.  Once again prayer mats out for fine weather!
  • Our very own Julie Napier is doing a 1000 kilometre running challenge during 2016 and would like to link it to The Captains’ charities. We will shortly be putting posters up to enabling members to sponsor Julie either a fixed amount or so much per mile. A big THANK YOU to Julie for undertaking the challenge and offering the proceeds to charity. RUN JULIE RUN!
  • The first Captain’s Drive In to take place in May happened on the 28th and despite my reservations it was a brilliant event.  I was so nervous I had an hour’s lesson with Ed on the Friday and another half an hour on the Saturday morning! Those attending bought a lollipop stick for a £1 and placed them in the ground where they thought the Captains’ drive would land! This raised £100 for charity so thanks to all of this who took part! The time with Ed paid off and thankfully I hit a half decent drive. The Drive in was followed by a 4 ball match with any combination of team allowed and prizes were given for each category.  We then danced the night away until midnight to music from Faze. All in all, a day to remember and thanks to all who made it possible.  There are some super pics on Facebook thanks to Geoff.
  • A warm welcome to a new lady, Stephanie Burns who joined us recently. She is new to golf and is keen to play so if you’d like to offer her a game, she can be reached on 07757 661561.
  • One of our Sponsors, British Gymnastics has extended an invitation to the ladies section to watch the trials of the Ladies Olympic Gymnastics team. Check the poster in the Ladies Locker Room, Saturday 18th June at 3pm and Sunday 19thJune at 11am.
  • A message from Stan regarding the Las Vegas Scramble – on 16th July, it’s a mixed game, drawn at random, ‘Everything’s a Gamble!’, BBQ after the game – look out for the Poster.

 Linda
