OCTOBER NEWSLETTER

RYDER CUP – We all gathered on the Friday evening for the Pre Ryder Cup Dinner when we found out which team we were playing for and given our shirts.  There will be no mistaking those who played for Europe when they wear their ‘Sunday’ shirts on the course – they were bright pink! There was much fun and laughter as we played Irish bingo and both Captains gave their ‘team talks!’

DAY 1 – We were all off the tee bright eyed and bushy tailed to play Four Ball Better Ball. Sadly it rained all day but we battled on. After we had all dried out we returned for food and danced the night away to Chris King. What a fabulous night! Who would have thought we were all in training for the Sunday match?!

DAY 2 – Singles Match. The weather was fantastic – what a change from the Saturday. Everyone sat down to a hearty Sunday lunch. It was apparent when I came in that USA was well in the lead and that didn’t change. We try at Lilleshall to match our event to the real one and this year even the result was the same. All in all a fabulous couple of days – the fun and camaraderie were fantastic. I think Snax may have a problem losing his American drawl though!

LADIES FRIENDLY MATCHES – We played our last Friendly Match at Brockton on Monday 3rd October. Unfortunately it was a win for Brockton but the weather was very kind and we were made to feel very welcome.  I would like to say a very big “Thank You” to those who have played throughout the season.  These matches are great fun and a wonderful way to meet ladies from other clubs.  Another big “Thank You” must go to Lady Vice Captain Chris, and Brenda Murphy for organizing these matches. This is the first time we have had an Assistant Friendly Match Organizer and it has worked extremely well. Brenda has done a sterling job!

Mixed Friendly Matches – We played at Ingestre on Saturday 8th October and the weather was glorious! There was some slight confusion over the starting time as the last group came in just as it was getting dusk! The hospitality from Ingestre was wonderful. It is always a pleasure to play there and the result was very fitting – we halved the match.

FRIENDLY MATCH V WALSALL 22ND OCTOBER – This was our last Friendly Match of the season. I had never played Walsall before but thoroughly enjoyed it and again our playing partners were very hospitable and friendly. It started to drizzle on the 1st tee and we all thought ‘oh no’, however it soon blew over and the sun came out! The result was a resounding win for Lilleshall 6½ to 4½. It was wonderful to finish the season on a “high!”

CONGRATULATIONS BERNADETTE – who won the final stableford competition of the year with a fantastic 42 points. Well done Bernadette!

NEW LOOK LADIES V SENIORS – We have all heard of Gorillas in the Mist, well initially we were Golfers in the Mist! The mist didn’t actually clear until we were on the back 9! Aiming for the flag really wasn’t an option – you couldn’t see it! Eventually the sun broke through and we all finished 18 holes. The new format was 2 Ladies and 2 Men with the best Ladie’s score and the best Man’s score going on the card. It was tremendous fun and a thoroughly enjoyable day.  As you would expect, some prefer the new format and some prefer the old so perhaps we may run one of each next year – watch this space!

The winners were Sue Parker, Stan Cornes, Peters Williams and Mike Redfern.  We were one lady short so Stan stepped into the breach. I think that if this happens again we will have to insist that he wears a dress! In 2nd place were Alice Drewnickie, Alex Collins, David Thomas and Malcom Widdows. In 3rd place were Margaret Edwards, myself, Zed Pazio and Barrie Sutherland and in 4th place were Linda Porteous, Joan Lawson, Rick Tiller and Tony Hewlett.

A WORD FROM YOUR COMPETITIONS SECRETARY – The Competition Team has been listening to Ladies’ requests and has endeavoured to run competitions to meet everyone’s needs.

The majority of our lady members can arrange to play in most major competitions on Tuesdays, however, some cannot.

Therefore next season we have agreed with The General Committee that we will trial a few Sunday dates as alternative/additional for major competitions in the following week. Competitors can only enter on the one date but the result will be aggregated over the two days.

We will continue to schedule half of our monthly medals on a Saturday (that is, one per month). Where possible these will be alongside a Men’s Medal or Stableford, so that there is a greater continuity in the playing format of the day.

In addition, next season during the longer summer days, we will attempt a late afternoon draw time to accommodate the time constraints of working ladies, and monitor the uptake.

Finally, over the winter we suggest trying to offer some of our fun Tuesday competitions on a Saturday, as a separate event available to all.

I hope you will find this useful. Please let me know if you have any constructive suggestions – all will be given serious consideration.

Julie Cann, Competitions Secretary.

BENCH IN MEMORY OF MARGO – In total we have raised £231.93 to purchase a bench.  Thank you to all who contributed. In addition the General Committee have agreed to contribute £100 making a total of £331.93. I have been in contact with Alan and the family and they are happy that we go ahead and purchase the bench, however they feel that it would be prudent to wait until the spring rather than have the bench outside in the winter. Hopefully, ladies, you are in agreement with this.

JULIE NAPIER’S 1000 KILOMETRES RUN – Julie would like any future monies pledged to go towards the club refurbishment programme. Monies already pledged will go towards the Captains’ charities.

SPOOKTACULAR HALLOWEEN COMPETITION – Mixed team 9 hole competition with the best 2 scores – one man and one woman – to count on the card. For the time of the year the weather was great and many made a brilliant effort to dress up. Alex Collins won the best dressed woman and David Kidby won the best dressed man – very scary!

In 7th place were David Wilkes, Chris Downing, Jo Cole, and Kevin Cole – they won a toffee apple! In joint 2nd place were Snax, Alex Collins, Paul and myself, Ruth Belcher, Anthony Sutton, Sue and David Parker. In 1st place with 44 points were Mr. Captain Will, Maureen Shepherd, Ben McNamara and Sue Everatt – well done guys! Although it was a small field it was really great fun and we had a thoroughly enjoyable day.

CHRISTMAS COMPETITION AND LUNCH – I cannot believe Christmas is almost upon us! It only seems 5 minutes since I was planning my Lady Captain’s Day! The sheet for the Christmas Competition is on the board. It promises to be great fun on the day so don’t forget to put your names down ladies! The menu for the lunch is also on the board.

OUR BLOOD BIKE LILLE  – Many of you know that last month our Blood Bike Lille was involved in an accident – she encountered a herd of black cows (12 of them) in the middle of the night. The rider, Steve, suffered 3 broken ribs & a punctured lung but is recovering well. Lille was a write off. The good news is that the insurance money has enabled us to buy a second hand bike, which will also be called Lille – she will be paying us a visit soon once she has been liveried up in the SSBB colours.

TELEPHONE LIST – As you are aware, we issued a new telephone list with the last newsletter and we had asked if there were any changes to be made in the previous one, however, it appears that we need to make a further couple of amendments. Before we do this can you PLEASE check that your telephone numbers are correct? Thank you.

SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER

CAPTAINS’ CHARITY DAY – Sadly the trend for extreme weather conditions on my ‘event days’ continued – it poured down with rain and the golf had to be cancelled. Participants in the golf were brilliant and agreed to leave their entry fees in the pot for the charities.  All teams were given a raffle ticket and the prizes that would have been won by the winners of the golf were raffled off, which everyone was happy with. ‘Elvis Presley’ was brilliant. There was much singing and dancing; we held an auction for 4 or 5 special items donated by various people/companies, which raised a large amount of money.  In total on the day we raised approximately £1,700 including the raffle. Thank you so much, to all those who took part and also to those who helped organize the day. Snax once again was awesome as the MC and auctioneer!

Unfortunately, the end of the evening was overshadowed due to the fall of Gordon Green, who sadly died a few days later. My heart felt sympathy goes to his wife Jean, and his children Jeremy, Stephanie and Emma.

FRIENDLY MATCHES – September is a very busy month for Friendly Matches; we played the Shifnal ‘B’ Team at home on the 12th of September, the result being a landslide victory for Lilleshall. Well done to all of those who played.

On the 15th September we played Worfield away and were beaten. Thank you girls for your efforts – Worfield is not an easy course to play.

We then played Enville at home on the 21st September and won.  Many thanks and well done to those who took part. Thankfully we just got in before the heavens opened!

We competed in the Tri Match at Shifnal on the 26th September but we did lose the trophy to Shifnal. The scores were: Shifnal 4, Lilleshall 3½ and Wrekin 1½. Those taking part deserve a medal as it rained all day! The conditions were not easy to play in so a big, “Thank you girls” for your efforts and determination!

NEW LOOK LADIES V SENIORS – The list is up in the Ladies’ changing room, which confirms the new format. Please join in. It is a shotgun start at 10.30am!! There cannot be any complaints about the start time!

CLUB QUESTIONNAIRE – Ladies, please note “IT’S TIME TO HAVE YOUR SAY.” Fill in the club questionnaire and let’s try and move our club forward!

STABLEFORD SCORING – Please ALWAYS include the GROSS score on your cards and log the GROSS scores on the computer NOT the Stableford points. Please do not tear off the top section of the new scorecard.

PLAY ON COURSE – I have been asked to issue a gentle reminder of the email issued by The Club Secretary in June of this year, which states:

On Major Competition days (Gents and Ladies) 4 balls will not be allowed to play between 8am and 1pm (this naturally does not apply when there is a 4 ball Major Event scheduled). If 4 ball matches starting before 8am are caught by Major competitors they must give way.

For other Competition days, such as Monthly Medals, Stablefords etc. the recommendation to adhere to playing in the Competition format of the day, where possible, remains. Starting play from the 5th Tee is prohibited on any Competition day.

MAIDEN SPONSORS’ DAY – A sincere thank you to the ladies who helped create a runaway success of a Sponsors’ day last Friday. The Sponsors are very important to our club. We all had a wonderful day of golf, a super meal and fun thereafter.

THANK YOU

Sue and LYNNE

MIXED FRIENDLY MATCHES – we played Worfield at home on the 4th June and we were thrashed!  I think there are perhaps a few members of Worfield who need their handicaps adjusting – not that I’m bitter or anything! Will and I were beaten on the 18th so we did hold them off until then, not bad bearing in mind after the 3rd we were 3 down!

HANDICAP LEAGUE – well done to the Ladies who played in the Hawkestone Match on 3rd of June and against Bridgnorth on the 20th June. We are now through to the next round. Thank you to all who play in these matches and a big thank you to Elizabeth Kenyon for all of her hard work.

MIXED OPEN SUNDAY 5TH JUNE – what a glorious day weather wise.  74 players took part. The winners came in with 41 points, one of the players was a member at The Shropshire and one from Shrewsbury, players from Trentham came 2nd with 40 points. Two teams came in with 39 points our very own Snax and Jane Carr came 3rd on count back just pipping Will and I to the post in 4th place. If only one of us had scored on the 17th!

FINAL MEDAL – Congratulations to Jo Cole on winning the Final Medal and to Bernadette for being runner up.

CAPTAINS WEEKEND – A very enjoyable weekend. In the main the weather was kind, however it did rain on the Sunday afternoon which caught some of us playing in the mixed and the Play Offs.

Mr Captain and I played in the mixed fun competition on the Saturday evening and won! Jenny and Roger Seager were 2nd. It’s lovely to see new members coming in the prizes. The Mixed

on the Sunday was won by Bernadette and Andy Micklewright with Julie and Andy Napier being runners up – well done to both couples!

CONGRATULATIONS to Elaine Gee on being made A Honorary Life Vice President which reflects all of the hard work and time she has devoted to Lilleshall Hall Golf Club over the years.

CONGRATULATIONS also to Katrina Gillum for becoming a scratch golfer!

INTERNET – Hopefully our internet problems have been resolved as we now have a 4G system installed. This should assist our Comps and Handicap teams greatly. However remember if you have any queries please contact one of the team who will be happy to help.

ST PIERRE AWAY TRIP – Sunday – Everyone gathered at around midday for sandwiches and chips lots of fun and laughter which was great.  Myself, Anne Ford and Anne Sayner were the 1st to T off at 1.30pm and guess what, there were a few spots of rain which sadly got worse. However the girls battled on.  Nearest the pin was won by Jayne Sandford, 1st prize went to Joan Lawson, Maureen Shepherd, Jane Moore and Antoinette with a fantastic score of 90 points!  2nd prize was won by Jill Woodhams, Sarah Watson Jones Jean Major and Margaret Edwards with a score of 86 points. Scores on the day ranged from 82 to 76 well done to all.  A fantastic day, a very weary bunch of ladies fell into bed at around 11.30pm!

MONDAY – Played the Old Course, fabulous course to play. Weather was glorious. My playing partners were Jayne Sandford, Alex Collins and Jane Carr and we had a super time. All the girls came to my room for a surprise Buck’s Fizz and cake party to celebrate the Naughty O’s birthdays   I certainly  made the right decision booking all of our rooms at the Lakeside Village rather than in the main hotel because it did get rather noisy to say the least! The winners of the Texas Scramble were Antoinette, Anne Sayner, Chris Downing and Ronnie Simpson with 72.2 points, in second place were Sue Parker, Jane Moore, Maureen Shepherd and Brenda Murphy with 73.8 points. Scores for the whole field ranged from 74.1 to 81.6 which is brilliant on that course.

Jan Lamb won the bucket and spade for being in the most bunkers and Alex Collins won the snorkel and goggles for losing all of her balls in the water! Nearest the pin was won by Julie Cann.

We enjoyed a magical few days away lots of fun and laughter. Thanks to all of you who joined me on this trip for making it such a memorable occasion.  There’s a lot of photographic evidence which will be displayed shortly!

LADIES INVITATION – 5th July.  There are a few spaces left if anyone would like to play

  • What a brilliant day we had at Swindon.  I hope you all enjoyed yourselves as much as I did.  Sorry about the rain girls but at least we started out in sunshine and hopefully you didn’t get too wet! The rain seems to be following me around at the moment, hopefully it will improve!  Well done to all those in the prizes. Everyone at The Staffordshire made us very welcome which helped to make the day.  Thank you to all those who helped to organise the day and to our resident photographer Sue for the fabulous pics which are on display in the foyer as you come into the Ladies Locker Room. A big big thank you to all of you who took part on the day you really did make the day special, you are a great bunch of ladies.
    • I certainly don’t think any of us will forget our very very wet Ladies Open on the 10th of May. It rained all day it was just a matter of how hard!  We would have been better with snorkels and flippers rather than golf clubs! Despite the weather 22 teams out of 30 actually completed the game, and bearing in mind the conditions, there were good scores.  The winners came in with a score of 79, followed by 3 teams with 74.  The count back actually went down to the 18th hole to determine 2nd 3rd and 4th places. Congratulations to all of the prize winners and well done to all of you who persevered in such atrocious conditions. Thank you to Denise Morton and her team for their help in organising the day and to Margaret Edwards who stepped into the breach while Denise was away. Thanks must also go to Lynne Stone who resolved the majority of the competition and to Anne Collier and the girls for running the raffle which raise £135 for charity. Don’t forget our Ladies Invitation which is on the 5th July, the sheet will be going up in the Ladies Locker Room shortly – let’s get our prayer mats out for better weather!
    • Sadly we lost the Tri Match at the Wrekin.  Shifnal won with Wrekin coming 2nd. However we all enjoyed the day and the weather was glorious.  The Tri Match will be hosted at Lilleshall next year so come on Team Lilleshall we need a win!
    • We also lost the handicap league match at Ludlow but thank you girls for your valiant efforts. The next match is at Home against Hawkestone on the 3rd June so good luck we all know you will do your best.
    • We remain unbeaten in the Friendly matches, halving our game away at Ingestre.  It was nice to see Liz Johnson join in and she really enjoyed the day. It would be good to see some other new faces playing. These matches really are good fun and it’s a great way to make friends. Our next match is away at Shifnal on the 4th July and is the ‘A team match’ which means you have to have a handicap between 1 & 28.  There is another game later in the year for ladies with handicaps of 29 to 36.
    • Congratulations to Jane Carr who won the Past Captains match at Oswestry. Well done Jane!
    • Ladies please note – if there is a problem with the computer and you cannot swipe your card to enter a competition please just enter your details in the red book. THERE IS NO NEED TO PUT MONEY IN AN ENVELOPE IN THE BOX. When the Competition team enters your scores the computer will automatically take the money from your card.
    • INTERNET – As you are all probably aware we are having a lot of problems with our internet.  The General Committee are treating this with high priority and looking at installing a 4G system.  Without the Internet scores cannot be recorded on How Did I Do so please be patient with our Comps and Handicaps teams who are doing a sterling job!
    • My away weekend draws ever closer.  The balance of the monies need to be paid please girls as I have to pay St Pierre by the 3rd June. There is a list on the Captains board with details of the amounts owed. Please make your cheques payable to Linda Fisher and put them in an envelope marked St Pierre for the attention of Lynne Stone or Chris Downing.  The finer details of the trip will be issued shortly to those taking part, I know we will have a fab time.  Once again prayer mats out for fine weather!
    • Our very own Julie Napier is doing a 1000 kilometre running challenge during 2016 and would like to link it to The Captains’ charities. We will shortly be putting posters up to enabling members to sponsor Julie either a fixed amount or so much per mile. A big THANK YOU to Julie for undertaking the challenge and offering the proceeds to charity. RUN JULIE RUN!
    • The first Captain’s Drive In to take place in May happened on the 28th and despite my reservations it was a brilliant event.  I was so nervous I had an hour’s lesson with Ed on the Friday and another half an hour on the Saturday morning! Those attending bought a lollipop stick for a £1 and placed them in the ground where they thought the Captains’ drive would land! This raised £100 for charity so thanks to all of this who took part! The time with Ed paid off and thankfully I hit a half decent drive. The Drive in was followed by a 4 ball match with any combination of team allowed and prizes were given for each category.  We then danced the night away until midnight to music from Faze. All in all, a day to remember and thanks to all who made it possible.  There are some super pics on Facebook thanks to Geoff.
    • A warm welcome to a new lady, Stephanie Burns who joined us recently. She is new to golf and is keen to play so if you’d like to offer her a game, she can be reached on 07757 661561.
    • One of our Sponsors, British Gymnastics has extended an invitation to the ladies section to watch the trials of the Ladies Olympic Gymnastics team. Check the poster in the Ladies Locker Room, Saturday 18th June at 3pm and Sunday 19thJune at 11am.
    • A message from Stan regarding the Las Vegas Scramble – on 16th July, it’s a mixed game, drawn at random, ‘Everything’s a Gamble!’, BBQ after the game – look out for the Poster.

    • The AGM went well and was well attended. Phillipa came with her dog Tarka. She explained how he helped make her daily life easier by helping her with various tasks and how he was able to raise the alarm when she was unwell.  Tarka enjoyed the fuss he received and thoroughly enjoyed roaming free range around the clubhouse for a short while. An article with photographs of the fashion show and Phillipa with Tarka appeared in the Newport Advertiser which hopefully will help to raise awareness of the charity ‘Dogs for Good’.  The Ladies committee have met and re-visited the points raised under AOB at the Ladies AGM regarding the 9th hole. A notice confirming their findings will be displayed over the next few days on the Lady Captains notice board in the Ladies Changing Room.

    •  Handicap League  – Well done to the ladies who have played. They have won their first two matches against Bridgnorth and Ludlow.

    • Sadly we were beaten by Enville in the Mail on Sunday but a big thank you to those that played.

    • Friendly Matches – Currently we are unbeaten. We won away at Stafford Castle, virtually unheard of I gather, and at home against Hawkestone 4 – 0! Keep up the good work girls!

    • Our Ladies Open will take place on May 10th and we have 90 competitors. Let’s hope for good weather and good luck to all those taking part.

    • The Ladies v Seniors match was a great success.  The Ladies won 7.5 to 9.5.  The Queen celebrated her 90th birthday on the same day and to mark the occasion we decked the club house with bunting provided all with Union Jacks and sang several songs including Land of Hope and Glory, Jerusalem etc. We presented Malcolm Wallace with a birthday cake and sang Happy Birthday.  I would like to thank Stan and Jenny Cornes and Chris Downing for all of their help in organising the day, Clair Bennett for the lovely cake, Jackie Minns for providing the flags, Jo Cole for printing the words to the songs Geoff Sellars for producing the music and to Snax our MC and music Maestro for ensuring the music was played at the right time! Well done to you all you were in fine singing voice!

    •   The mixed Tri match will take place at Wrekin on 15th May.  Good luck to all of those playing in it.

    •    Reminder – it is the Club AGM on the 26th May.

    • We have the Captain’s Drive in and Social on the 28th May. It promises to be a fun day – I will join in the fun once I have successfully driven a ball off the 1st tee!

    • Medal 2, which was cancelled on 16th April because of snow, will now run onSaturday 21st May, alongside the men’s medal.
